Teenage pregnancy can be frightening and a life-changing event to teenage mothers. Cases have been reported yearly but with the COVID – 19 pandemic that caused the closure of learning institutions, reported cases in teenage girls have risen to a major concern in Kenya.
Many causes have been outlined and parental guidance has been emphasised. Pregnancy in a woman nineteen years of age or younger is what my dictionary says, means.
According to World Health Organisations, complications during pregnancy or childbirth are the leading cause of death globally for teenage girls.
Causes of the same have been discussed far and wide by stakeholders and all concerned. Solutions have been provided but today, let’s shed some light on the unheard woes of pregnant teenage girls. It does not affect only the individual but also society as a whole.
A healthy pregnancy goes for a period of forty weeks. Teenage mothers are likely to deliver before the end of 37 weeks hence, premature birth. In my opinion, this should be a describable crisis.
It puts the mother in distress. Providing teenagers with knowledge, ethics notwithstanding, on how to handle such experiences could bring more good than we think.
It is ironical how society sometimes despises these kids and deny them basic information then later judge them for not reaching the expectations of caregiving.
Confiding in a supportive environment will be a delighting experience. Being a mother at an early age can be such a herculean task.
Research shows that teens are at a higher risk of pregnancy-related high blood pressure (preeclampsia) and its complications.
There could be a reduction of the number of red blood cells in the body and exposing the innocent mother to anaemia.
Underweight babies have trouble breathing and feeding. It is evident that such a baby will have lifelong health and development issues. Rejection should not be heard among our young teenage mothers. Support is paramount.
In a wrap, although society has to accept the consequences of their ignorance, these teenage girls get affected more than anyone else. We all ought to uphold values among our teenagers.
In addition, counselling and sex education has to be key because it’s time to get to the root of the problem.
